How to Get Started
Naltrexone and Bupropion
Each component has a different clinical role. Their combination may help certain eligible adults manage appetite and cravings when used as part of a broader treatment plan.
Naltrexone
Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist. In Contrave®, it is used as part of the combination’s effect on appetite and reward pathways.
- Can block the effects of opioid medications
- Requires careful review of current and recent opioid use
- May complicate pain treatment if opioid analgesia is needed
Bupropion
Bupropion affects norepinephrine and dopamine pathways and is also used in other products for depression or smoking cessation.
- Can increase seizure risk in susceptible patients
- May increase blood pressure or heart rate
- Should not be combined with other bupropion-containing products
Contrave® must be prescribed and monitored by a licensed clinician. Do not start, stop, or change opioid, antidepressant, or other medications without discussing the change with the prescribing provider.
